About Us

Our Mission

NICU aims to provide care to those in need with a focus on serving mothers, and underrepresented groups. NICU advocates and educates people on health and wellness through presentations and media. We will effectively serve mothers by providing baskets with essential pre/post natal items.

Who We Are

Amy Villanueva: President

Hi, my name is Amy Villanueva and my major is Public Health. My interests include going on hikes, watching Netflix, and reading! I founded NICU with hopes of sharing my passion for Women Reproductive Health as well as sharing story. My triplet sisters were born prematurely, weighing approximately one pound each. For several months my family visited the NICU at the hospital hoping that my sister’s health would get better. Surpassing all expectations, these practitioners made it their obligation to make my sisters feel loved and nurtured in their first moments of life. At that instance, I witnessed the true meaning of compassion. These professionals have no previous relationship to my family yet were willing to do everything in their power to ease our fears, beat the odds, and help my sisters survive. That compassion is what encourages me to always give back to the community and help others through volunteering. I have a massive passion to serve others and I believe that because of this passion, NICU can make a difference in the way medicine impacts individuals.

Katherine Klender: Vice President

Hi! My name is Katie Klender and I am an intended Psychology major following the Pre-Med track. I love spending time cuddling with my dogs, going on hikes in the Berkeley hills, and discovering hidden-gem restaurants in the East Bay. I am extremely passionate about advocating for women's rights, sexual health, mental health awareness, and affordable access to excellent medical care. I am so excited to be a part of the NICU team and push to make both the Berkeley and extended Bay Area community a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Hi, my name is Slava Chemerinski and I am an intended Integrative Biology major with a pre-med track. I am extremely passionate about working towards greater accessibility in medicine for underrepresented communities, specifically with the focus being on women and infant’s health. On the weekends I enjoy spending time with friends, watching movies, and curating playlists. I believe NICU has the capabilities of having an immense impact on our local area, and that with passionate individuals, we can make a large difference in the support networks for expectant mothers and families in underrepresented communities.

Mackenzie O’Brien: Social Chair

My name is Mackenzie O’Brien and I am a second-year Integrative Biology student pursuing the medical field. I love creating art, exploring new places and spending hours watching investigation documentaries on Netflix. My love for NICU stems from my devotion to understanding and improving the adversities faced by those in less fortunate socioeconomic situations. I believe that education of the world around us makes it easier to get involved and make impactful actions where ideas come to life. I strongly believe in representation and unconditional support in a community and hope to be apart of promoting an environment in which all people can advocate for and receive accessible resources necessary for mental and physical healthcare.
